Jem and the Holograms

Does anyone remember the cartoon Jem and the Holograms?

Yes I know it was out before I was born (1985) and ended on the year I was born (1988) and there was only three seasons, but I still watched it and had the dolls. I was “old skool” before “old skool” was cool I guess. But I loved that cartoon, and now there are making a movie that is supposed to be out in October 2015 of the old cartoon series.

The dolls were a bit weird looking, but I still loved playing with them!

And now there is going to be a movie with a some what okay cast, though I can not predict that it will be successful, and really it may not be. But to see a child hood cartoon in real life to me is quite amazing. Jem and the Holograms was an excellent cartoon and I feel like it was a little ahead of it’s time.

The series is about Jem who is the lead singer of the rock group, “Jem and the Holograms.” Her real name though is Jerrica and she was able to disguise herself with a holographic computer, which was named Synergy. Jerrica (Jem) controls Synergy and is able to project “Jem” over herself by her earrings, and disguising her features and clothing. In the series the group consisted of Kimber Benton, which was Jerrica’s (Jem) younger sister and the keyboardist of the group. There was also Aja Leith who was the guitarist, Shana Elmsford who played the synth drums. Aja and Shana are childhood friends, as well as adopted foster sisters of Jerrica and Kimber. In the series Shana leaves the group for her dream job in fashion, and a new character is introduced, Carmen “Raya” Alonso. I will not go further into the plot, in case you (my fellow nerds) would like to check the series out for yourself!

The movie that is supposed to come out this October seems to have a little bit of a different approach, I suppose they wanted to make it more modern. IMDB says that, “As a small-town girl catapults from underground video sensation to global superstar, she and her three sisters begin a journey of discovering that some talents are too special to keep hidden.” So I am not sure if they will keep the original plot of the series, it seems they are implementing certain aspects of it, but making it their own in this more modern world. Which tends to happen quite often, but sometimes the movies are a big hit, others a big miss. I can’t wait to watch it though!

  1. Ha. Nice nostalgic post. And thank you so much for the versatile blog nomination! I just got back from vacation so I never got a chance to thank you. I’m also totally new to this whole thing so I don’t even have enough people to do the whole nomination thing myself but I absolutely appreciate you mentioning my blog. Thank you for following!
